The Tändlergasse and the AltstadtQuartier Regensburg
This district of houses around the Regensburg Old Town Quarter, which is so typical of Regensburg, appears in the sources as early as 1279 with the name “inter utensila” (= among everyday objects). The name “unter den Chramen” was first documented in 1359, and the name “Chramgasse” has been recorded since 1529. In 1613 the “Tandelmarkt” appears in the chronicle, where the Taendler, the old goods dealers, were present. The used goods trade was much more important in earlier times than it is today. Mostly shoes and clothing were traded. Old shoemakers repaired worn shoes for sale at the market, and sewn-together old clothes were exported from Taendlergasse as far as Hungary.
