The secret of the cat
The walls of the Hotel Münchner Hof in the old town district of Regensburg date back to the year 1300 and hide many secrets.
Such a secret was discovered during renovation work in the hotel lobby. While they were removing a wooden ceiling, a cat suddenly looked at the construction worker - a mummified cat! This is how an old custom emerged from long ago into modern times. Since the Neolithic, living creatures have been built in to protect houses. Cats were often chosen because they were considered an effective protective charm against witches, burglary and fire.
During the construction work, the cat was kept in a box and then given a new resting place. Only a few metres from where it was found, it was “walled in” again, this time behind glass, so hotel guests can admire it today. And who knows, perhaps one or another expressed wish or protective spell will come true.
Incidentally, this was not the first cat to be found. During renovation work in the Dependance Blauer Turm, a mummified cat was also discovered and walled in again. Hotel owner Kathrin Fuchshuber says: “Insiders know where it lies.” During guided tours through the house, she stops at the site and tells the story of the protective spell against witches. “What good was it? Nothing. The Muenchner Hof has been run exclusively by women for years.”
